Neobanks facing the challenge of profitability and mass customer acquisition

New digital banks like Revolut, Openbank, Hey, and Plata are already managing more than 81,200 million pesos in assets. We analyze their strategic progress and metrics at the close of the first half of 2026.

The Mexican financial landscape is undergoing a structural transformation with the commencement of operations of native digital banking licenses. By the end of June 2026, the group formed by Revolut, Hey, Plata, and Openbank has accumulated assets of just over 81,200 million pesos, representing 0.51% of the total sector.

The transition from financial technology figures to multiple banking institutions responds to a strategic need: the ability to attract public resources to diversify products and services. In this aspect, the four entities added more than 60,400 million pesos in fundraising during the first half of the year.

The breakdown by institution shows differentiated dynamism:

  • Openbank (Santander): Recorded a fundraising of 20,957 million pesos.
  • Plata: Reached 19,508 million pesos in deposits.
  • Hey Banco: Reported a balance of 12,708 million pesos after starting operations as an independent bank in February 2026.
  • Revolut Bank Mexico: Achieved a balance of 7,278 million pesos in resource fundraising.

Placement and Risk: The credit balance

Despite the success in fundraising, credit placement remains in a phase of controlled expansion with a total of 27,500 million pesos. In this segment, Plata leads with a portfolio of 15,950 million, followed by Hey Banco with 10,954 million. However, delinquency presents critical disparities that executives must monitor; while Revolut maintains a rate of 0.18%, Openbank reports 11.47% at the end of the period.

The path to operational profitability

According to information from the CNBV, Hey Banco is the only entity that recorded positive earnings in this first half, benefiting from its previous track record as the digital arm of Banregio. For the rest of the competitors, it is expected that profits will remain in negative territory for some time, a characteristic phase of the investment cycle of these platforms.

The progress of these banks confirms that the battle for the user is no longer fought solely in the app experience but in the strength of the balance sheet. What analysts from next+ observe is a phase of "building trust", where growth in assets (Plata with 27,461 mdp and Openbank with 27,021 mdp) is the immediate metric of success to validate their position against traditional banking. For the C-Levels of the sector, the challenge will be to balance this aggressive fundraising with delinquency management that allows achieving profitability without compromising digital agility.
