Amazon has announced an aggressive expansion of its drone delivery service, Prime Air, setting an operational goal that will radically transform the speed standard in e-commerce in the coming months.
A leap in scale: Coverage in 500 locations
The tech giant plans to provide drone delivery coverage to nearly 500 towns and cities in the United States by the end of the year, representing a six-fold increase compared to its previous geographic capacity. Currently, the pilot program and initial operations of Prime Air are limited to 10 metropolitan areas through 11 distribution centers (including regions like Phoenix, Tampa, Detroit, Houston, and Dallas).
The new deployment phase will bring unmanned aerial vehicles to large urban concentrations like Chicago and Atlanta, as well as regions like Syracuse (New York), Cleveland (Ohio), and Boise (Idaho).
Operational specifications: The weight and time challenge
The logistical model of Prime Air is designed under strict technical capacities and a segmented cost scheme to incentivize adoption:
- Payload capacity: Drones can carry almost any item weighing up to 5 pounds (approximately 2.2 kg) that fits in packaging equivalent to a large shoebox.
- Delivery times: The delivery commitment is set at an average of under 60 minutes, with record deliveries completed in just half an hour.
- Fee structure: Deliveries will be free for Prime members on minimum purchases of $50. For Prime orders under that amount, a fee of $3 will apply, while non-members will pay a flat rate of $5 per shipment.
