Meta's next wearable is an AI pendant

Meta develops AI pendant to record conversations, summarize meetings, and act as a continuous personal assistant.

Meta is working on an artificial intelligence-powered pendant that would function as a continuous personal assistant, according to internal company documents reported by TechCrunch. The device is part of a broader strategy to consolidate a wearable ecosystem with AI that accompanies the user throughout the day without relying on a smartphone.

The project is based on technology from Limitless, a company specialized in smart pendants that record conversations and generate transcriptions and summaries using AI. Meta acquired Limitless at the end of 2025 specifically to accelerate the development of such devices. The idea is for the pendant to record contextual information in real-time, summarize meetings, organize reminders, and assist in productivity tasks through continuous interaction. Initial internal tests are expected in the coming months.

The pendant is not the only move in this direction. Meta is also preparing new models of smart glasses and a business program called "Wearables for Work" aimed at professional environments. The company already has traction in the market with its Ray-Ban glasses developed in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica, one of the hardware products with AI that has seen the greatest commercial adoption among major tech companies.

The competitive context is relevant. OpenAI, Apple, and Google are concurrently working on devices that integrate AI assistants more naturally into everyday life, all aiming for the same goal: to reduce reliance on traditional screens and shift interaction with AI towards portable devices with permanent access to the user's context.

For Meta, the investment in wearables also serves a financial function. Reality Labs, its hardware and metaverse division, continues to report multibillion-dollar losses. AI wearables represent a more concrete path to profitability than the metaverse, with products that already have demonstrated demand and a clear use case for the consumer.

From the perspective of the next+ team, Meta's pendant signifies something broader than a new gadget: it is the consolidation of a bet on ambient AI, that which operates in the background without requiring the user to consciously activate it. If the smartphone was the platform that centralized digital life over the past fifteen years, AI wearables are the most serious attempt to distribute it into objects that the user carries without thinking about them. For organizations and professionals, the operational question is already on the table: when these devices achieve mass adoption, the boundaries between documented meeting, private conversation, and actionable data will need clear policies that most companies currently do not have.
