3.6 GW Mega Energy Deal: Google and Constellation Energy Drive the Data and Artificial Intelligence Era with Nuclear Power

Critical Infrastructure and Clean Transition: The Historic Alliance Between Google and Constellation Energy for the AI Era

Google has signed a 3,590-megawatt (GW) power supply agreement with Constellation Energy, marking one of the largest energy transactions in the technology industry in the United States. The alliance aims to supply the growing electricity demand of data centers dedicated to artificial intelligence processing within the PJM Interconnection grid, the country's largest electricity market.

At next+ we believe that the contract between Google and Constellation transcends a simple power purchase and highlights the true "bottleneck" of the artificial intelligence revolution: electrical infrastructure. By committing more than $4.3 billion in capital to extend and expand the lifespan of nuclear reactors, Big Tech companies are taking on the role of direct financiers of the national electricity grid. For technology and energy directors in the region, this move confirms that the sustainability of next-generation AI models will depend on zero-emission baseload agreements that guarantee 24/7 operation without saturating public networks.

Multi-million dollar investment and nuclear reactivation

The contract will trigger investments of more than 4.3 billion dollars by Constellation Energy to expand generation capacity at its nuclear plants in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic.

The financial scheme comprises two main pillars:

  • 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA): Includes 890 megawatts from the technical upgrade of 11 nuclear units distributed across Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The first of the modernized plants is expected to begin delivering power in 2028.
  • Long-term supply contract: Adds 2,700 additional megawatts to the PJM grid, providing long-term revenue certainty for Constellation's operational plants.

Amanda Peterson Corio, Google's Global Director of Energy and Power, stated:

“We are committed to responding to our growth responsibly, actively investing in clean, reliable energy that brings new capacity to our country's grids”.

Response to the "Bring Your Own Power" policy and sector context

The agreement responds directly to the regulation proposed by the PJM Interconnection administration (which covers 13 states), which requires large data centers to provide their own electricity generation capacity (bring your own power) or face remote disconnections during periods of maximum demand on the grid.

This initiative aligns with the technological race of Silicon Valley giants to ensure uninterrupted power supply. In the last two years, Constellation reactivated the Three Mile Island reactor for Microsoft, while Google previously contracted the reactivation of a NextEra Energy nuclear plant in Iowa.
