Geographical diversification and multichannel consolidation: The arrival of JD Sports in the Mexican market
The British sportswear and footwear chain JD Sports has announced its official entry into the Mexican market after finalizing a long-term strategic franchise alliance with distributor Grupo Axo. The operation represents a key move in geographical diversification to expand the firm's presence in Latin America.
From next+ the perspective is that the alliance between JD Sports and Grupo Axo exemplifies the maturity of the athleisure and sports footwear segment in Mexico. Faced with cooling consumer spending in the United States and Canada, major sportswear multinationals are identifying Latin America as a high-margin growth engine. By partnering with Grupo Axo, a local operator with extensive experience in managing international brands and omnichannel logistics, JD Sports minimizes execution risk and accelerates its deployment through the immediate conversion of more than 140 physical stores, combined with a robust e-commerce platform to compete directly in the dynamic Mexican market.
Commercial strategy and regional diversification
The entry into Mexico responds to a strategic need of the British firm to counteract the deceleration in demand recorded in its main operations in North America, a critical market that represents more than a third of its global revenues.
Under the terms of the commercial contract:
- Operational management: Grupo Axo will assume the integral administration of JD Sports' physical and e-commerce channels in the country.
- Exclusive catalog: The operation will use the intellectual property, own brand catalog, and exclusive products of the British firm.
- Store conversion: The deployment plan includes the conversion of more than 140 sports footwear points of sale belonging to Axo, as well as the gradual expansion of commercial space in strategic locations.
Consolidation of the global franchise network
With this move, JD Sports strengthens its international expansion model. The operation in Mexico consolidates the global franchise network of the British company, which adds more than 75 establishments operating under its corporate insignia in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
