In Mexico, the debut of the largest digital bank in the country

With over 15 million customers, Nu officially transitions to a bank after the authorization of the CNBV and the support of the IPAB.

Nu México has formalized its transformation into a banking institution, becoming the digital bank with the largest user base in the country by surpassing 15 million customers; a move that reconfigures the competition in the national financial sector.

Scalability and invisible technical transition

The Brazilian-origin institution completed a critical technological migration on August 5, allowing the transfer of its operation to a new banking infrastructure. This process was executed without interruptions in credit card, debit, or mobile app access services, demonstrating a superior technical execution capability in managing massive data. With the authorization of the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV), Nu stops operating under the figure of Popular Financial Company (Sofipo) to fully integrate into the regulated banking system.

Legal certainty and capital protection

The change in legal status entails a substantial modification in the protection of user deposits. Under the previous scheme, savings were covered by insurance limited to 25,000 Investment Units (Udis), approximately 225,000 pesos. From this debut as a bank, customers gain access to the backing of the Institute for the Protection of Bank Savings (IPAB), which protects up to 400,000 Udis per account, equivalent to 3.6 million pesos. This increase in the level of protection is a decisive factor in attracting higher volume deposits and strengthening consumer confidence in digital banking.

Implications for the financial ecosystem

The entry of Nu as an official bank exerts direct pressure on traditional institutions, forcing them to accelerate their own digital transformation and review their cost structures. The agility to migrate 15 million users to a new infrastructure without affecting daily operations sets a standard of efficiency for the industry.

From the perspective of next+, Nu's banking represents the definitive maturity of the fintech sector in Mexico. What is interesting to highlight is that competition no longer solely resides in user experience, but in regulatory solidity and the ability to offer institutional-level guarantees; this transition underscores that scale and trust are the most valuable assets in the contest for the Mexican financial market.
