Foray into home hardware and multi-brand architecture: The alliance between Apple and LG for the connected ecosystem
Apple is working on a new smart home device ecosystem in collaboration with LG, Bloomberg reported. The initiative represents a strategic expansion by the Cupertino tech company into new categories of residential hardware to strengthen its presence in the home automation segment.
Hardware co-development and brand strategy
The portfolio of jointly developed products includes smart locks, thermostats, and video doorbells. Both companies are also working on a series of security cameras for both indoor and outdoor use, as well as floodlights.
Despite being co-developed by both organizations, the devices will carry the LG brand. The formal announcement or presentation of these devices is expected to occur starting the second week of October.
Integration with central hub and competition with Amazon
The new devices are designed to natively link with Apple's upcoming smart home hub. This hub will include a 6-inch square screen with options for countertop placement or wall mounting.
With this move, the company seeks to directly compete against Amazon's dominance in the home security and automation sector, led by its Ring product line.
From the editorial perspective of next+, the co-development of residential hardware between Apple and LG marks a significant shift in the Cupertino firm's strategy. By turning to an established manufacturer like LG and allowing devices to carry its partner's brand, Apple reduces manufacturing risks and inventory acceleration while ensuring that software intelligence and ecosystem control remain centralized in its new home hub. For the e-commerce and consumer technology industry, this move will intensify the battle for control of the connected home against established giants like Amazon and Google.
