Oxxo and CFE sign partnership for internet top-ups

FEMSA's convenience chain adds CFE Internet para Todos to its ecosystem, allowing its users to make in-person top-ups.

Community connectivity and integrated services: The strategy of Oxxo and CFE to accelerate digital inclusion

Oxxo, the convenience store chain of Fomento Económico Mexicano (FEMSA), formalized a strategic alliance with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) with the objective of expanding connectivity for CFE Internet users throughout the country. Through this collaboration, customers of the state service will be able to make their top-ups either in person or digitally.

National reach and digital channel with Spin by Oxxo

The new service will be enabled in the more than 24,000 Oxxo stores distributed across the national territory, as well as within its digital financial platform Spin by Oxxo. Marcela Rincón, commercial payment manager at Oxxo Mexico, highlighted that this alliance aims to provide users with an accessible and nearby point to carry out their telecommunications transactions.

Among the central objectives of this initiative are:

  • Accessible top-up points: Broad coverage in urban and rural areas.
  • Ease in mobile telephony and internet: Speed in purchasing top-up packages.
  • Digital inclusion: Bringing connectivity services closer to communities with less financial or telecommunications infrastructure, contributing to government goals.

Consolidation of Oxxo as a hub for essential services

This alliance reinforces FEMSA's strategy to transform its convenience stores into comprehensive service centers for daily attention. The incorporation of CFE Internet adds to other relevant recent agreements:

  • Payment of Infonavit loans: Scheme announced to allow the payment of mortgage loans without commission, available 24 hours a day with a limit of up to 10,000 pesos per transaction.
  • Top-ups for Bait: Alliance with Walmart's virtual mobile operator (OMV) to offer a new channel for top-ups to its users.

From the editorial perspective of next+, the alliance between Oxxo and CFE Internet demonstrates how high-capillary physical retail becomes critical infrastructure for digital inclusion in Mexico. While the digital divide in remote communities is often attributed to the lack of connectivity, the real barrier often lies in the absence of accessible payment points without banking intermediation. By integrating CFE Internet alongside services like Infonavit and Bait within its 24,000 stores and the Spin app, FEMSA consolidates Oxxo not only as a commercial convenience channel but also as the most proximate and convenient transactional platform in the country.
