Predictive prevention in diabetes: Roche introduces AI algorithms to reduce the burden of therapeutic decisions
The pharmaceutical and biotechnology company Roche has announced the acquisition of CE Marking for its new continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) solution, Accu-Chek® SmartGuide. This regulatory certification paves the way for its commercialization in selected European markets, targeting adults over 18 years old with type 1 and type 2 diabetes who are following flexible insulin therapies.
Predictive algorithms and preventive control of hypoglycemia
Maintaining optimal blood sugar levels presents a complex daily challenge that requires people with diabetes to make up to 180 therapeutic decisions per day. Despite advances in monitoring devices, many patients experience an average of two episodes of hypoglycemia per week, of which one to two per year require urgent medical intervention. Additionally, episodes of nocturnal hypoglycemia generate high anxiety, disrupt sleep, and impair quality of life.
To address these unmet clinical needs, the Accu-Chek SmartGuide system integrates a 14-day sensor with an all-in-one applicator that transmits real-time glucose readings every five minutes to the mobile application. Through the Accu-Chek SmartGuide Predict app, the system processes data using artificial intelligence-trained algorithms to offer three key predictive capabilities:
- Early hypoglycemia alert: Detects and indicates the risk of experiencing low blood sugar episodes in the next 30 minutes.
- Short-term trend projection: Continuously models the estimated glucose evolution for the next two hours.
- Nocturnal risk estimation: Assesses the likelihood of hypoglycemia during sleep to allow for preventive interventions before going to rest.
Clinical accuracy and integration with healthcare professionals
In the clinical evaluations presented, the device demonstrated high diagnostic accuracy with a mean absolute relative difference (MARD) of 9.2%, placing 99.8% of the measurements within zones A and B of the Parkes Error Grid.
Moreover, the solution connects directly with the clinical platform Accu-Chek® Care. This integration allows doctors and healthcare teams to analyze detailed data alongside patients to assess the impact of lifestyle and adjust treatment in a personalized manner. Matt Sause, CEO of Roche Diagnostics, highlighted that the inclusion of predictive algorithms aims to transform diabetes management by enabling proactive decisions before a complication occurs.
